Finders

With award winning playwright, Rod Dungate, Liz has developed one of her many ideas for television, Finders. The first episode The Tears of Solomon is written, 5 more planned.

Synopsis

Finders finds people - young, old, people who’ve lost their ways and people who are making a new start. On occasions even people who have met violent deaths. The Finders team see it all: some cases have happy endings, some not, often they have no formal endings at all - because life just isn’t neat and tidy.

Five are in the Finders team: divorced Paula, in her forties, who is psychic. Her daughter, Alison, who ran away from home, is in a coma after a drug overdose. Alison is put on life support, & Paula is torn between her loyalty to Colin, the man who gives her love, understanding and stability, and her daughter, over whom she is fiercely protective and still feels wracked with guilt.

Victoria, never Vicky, ex police is married to Jason who is still in the force. Passed over for promotion Victoria left the police and has a point to prove, not least of all to herself.

Parveen in her twenties, ace driver who has a lost brother: from a Moslem family which presents its own conflicts of family tradition versus job. Parveen breaks the rules.

Wang, counsellor and IT whiz, married to poet and artist Su Li. Two fostered children keep them busy. Su Li’s son from her first marriage was abducted by her first husband, Wang always hopes in the course of his work he will find him for her.

Australian Scott, 32, handsome, tough, athletic, gay and profoundly deaf as a result of a diving accident.

Often the Finders team have fun in their work when they enjoy a meal together at Wang’s At other times they are in great danger as when Scott rooting around in the cellar of a house belonging to a suspected serial killer doesn’t hear the return of the owner. Or Parveen, petrified of water after a childhood incident, finds herself thrown off a boat to drown when working under cover tracking down a missing teenager who is involved in more than prostitution .

The Finders office is in the centre of Birmingham,. The West Midlands is home to many, diverse communities and all have their stories to tell for better or worse and their work takes them all over the country.

The team are friends as well as colleagues and their lives don’t stand still. Nor are their personal lives completely separate from their working lives. How could they be? Their jobs impact on their lives when they become too involved with a client, or perhaps when a search for a missing person so closely parallels their own tragic involvement with missing family or friends that their lives are never the same again.

PARVEEN
So he says, "What have you come as?"
The bloke says, "A snail."
So he points at the female draped around the bloke's neck and says, "Well, if you're a snail, who's that?"
"That? Oh that's Michelle."

Groans from some, in the mood for being silly and GIGGLES from others. Wang raises his glass which is empty.

WANG
I think I'd better get another couple of bottles.

Wang looks across at his wife

SU LI
(Nodding)
In the fridge.

Wang rises and moves to the kitchen, the CHATTER continues.

 SU LI (CONT'D)
(Calling )
There's some red in the rack.

VICTORIA
(Giggling )
What was Michelle wearing?

SCOTT
A shell suit!

PARVEEN
No! Nothing but a smile!
There are few cries of "Oh," "Risque!"

EXT. STREET
The deserted street outside. It's pouring with RAIN and heavy clouds hide the moon.

An elderly woman, HILDA GOLDBLUM dressed only in her night clothes stumbles around the corner.

She races frantically along the pavement. Her BREATHING's harsh and laboured.

A sinister, black saloon car turns into the street its headlights catch the fleeing old lady.

She stops and turns, her terrified face is caught in the car headlights and she muffles a scream as she focuses on the car.

Hilda WHIMPERS and runs desperately up the driveway of a house and HAMMERS on the door.

PAULA
Sizeable cheques!

She smiles at her partner Colin who gives her hand a squeeze.

SCOTT
Size isn't everything!

The others respond with "Oh yeah?" " It's quality not
quantity" etc. They are having an excellent time.

EXT. STREET - NIGHT

Hilda rushes up the driveway of Wang's house.

She can hear the LAUGHTER outside.

The soft light's spilling through the chinks in the curtain.

The sinister vehicle cruises slowly and threateningly towards the driveway.

The street looks almost deserted, the rain's driving down.

We see down the driveway from Wang's POV. There's nothing.

A CAR moves away and Wang shuts out the night.

INT. WANG'S DINING ROOM. NIGHT.

Su Li has wrapped the old lady in a blanket.

She wipes her rain drenched face with a towel and then holds her trying to calm her pitiful SOBBING.

The dinner party's forgotten, the atmosphere shattered, the team are trying to decide what to do.

JASON
Call the station.

VICTORIA
You're not on duty now.

JASON
It's the only sane thing to do.

VICTORIA
No, not yet. Look at her, she's petrified.

PAULA
She'd be better off in a hospital. At least have her checked over.

JASON
I still think we should call the police.

At the mention of the word `hospital' and `police', Hilda becomes even more HYSTERICAL and tries to wrigglefree.

We see the room from Hilda's POV. She looks at the faces around her and the Finders' faces swim before her eyes and tears stream down her face.

PAULA
It's all right. No-one's going to hurt you.

Paula takes Hilda's arm and as she does so, the shock of a memory waves over her, she `sees' Hilda's visions.

PAULA (CONT'D)
(In fear and pain)
Oh my God!

EXT. PRISON CAMP - NIGHT 1942

Two ten year old GIRLS in the concentration camp at night behind a prison hut.

One's keeping watch, whilst the other is searching for something on the ground.

We see she's poking about in recently defecated stools.

Something sparkles in the debris, she retrieves a number of jewels.

The lookout, Hilda, hisses a warning.

HILDA
Look out! Flat face is coming.

She runs to the other girl's side as a GUARD (26) approaches who spots them and SHOUTS in German.

HILDA (CONT'D)
Quick!

GUARD
Oi! .... You two... Halt!

GIRL
Take them. You know what to do.

HILDA
Come on!

GIRL
I can't.. we'll have more chance if we split up. Go!

The girl passes the jewels to Hilda who makes a dash for it.

The guard reaches the other girl and he drags her away.

Hilda dodges between huts and hurriedly washes the gems in a muddy puddle before swallowing them.

Su Li enters the hall.

SU LI
It's OK. Let's get you back to bed.

She ushers them back up the stairs to their rooms.

INT. LIVING ROOM

The Finders are in deep discussion about what's best to do.

The table's still laid with desserts, a cheese board and coffee.

WANG
We simply haven't the room here.

PARVEEN
(looking across at Paula)
I've only got a small flat.

PAULA
I'd love to be able to help, but I have to get to the
hospital to say good night to Alison.

COLIN
You could leave it for one night.

PAULA
She needs me.

Colin throws a look which shows his disapproval.

PAULA (CONT'D)
What about Scott?

She looks at him, and signs.

PAULA (CONT'D)
She must be taken somewhere where she feels safe.

SCOTT
It would be difficult with Patrick.
Besides, two men.....

VICTORIA
I suppose that leaves us. Jason?

JASON
I don't see we have much choice.

VICTORIA
She can have Carrie's room.
(Explains to the others)
She's away on a field trip.

Paula and Parveen watch from the drive and return to the house as the car pulls away.

EXT. STREET

As Jason's car pulls away and Paula and Parveen turn back to the house, the black saloon turns into the bottom of the road and pauses.

It's clearly travelled around the block and pulls out from the shadows and follows Jason's car.

EXT. STREET.

Shot of Hilda's frightened face peering through the rear rain spattered, windscreen of the car.

Her tears mingle with the raindrops until the back wiper blade wipes away what was left of the rain.

EXT. OFFICE BLOCK BIRMINGHAM CITY - DAY

Establishing shot of a building housing the Finders' office.

INT. FINDERS OFFICE

Parveen's catching up on some paper work, Paula is filing and Scott's on the computer, closing completed case files.

The talk has been of the night before when they are interrupted by an unpleasantly assertive woman, middle aged, smartly dressed - KIRSTY FLETCHER.

KIRSTY
Excuse me. I was told that you find people.

PARVEEN
I'm sorry - we're not open yet, but if you'd like to
wait, get a coffee or something....

KIRSTY
(complaining)
But I have to be at work myself.

PARVEEN
Just give me a couple of minutes

KIRSTY
I hardly think a secretary would be much use.

Parveen bristles at this. She goes to respond but Kirsty interrupts her, pointing at Paula

KIRSTY (CONT'D)
How about her? She doesn't look too busy.

PAULA
Oh, I'm just the filing clerk.

Paula and Parveen exchange a look as if to say, "Got out of that!" The office door opens, and Colin enters.

COLIN
Sorry... Paula, can I have a word?

Paula closes the filing cabinet and exits with Colin, leaving Kirsty nonplussed.

Kirsty spots Scott and settles herself into the seat opposite him.

KIRSTY
You'll do.

We see the expression on Scott's face " what the f....?"

INT. CORRIDOR OUTSIDE OFFICE - DAY

Colin has his arms around Paula, they're enjoying a tender moment.

COLIN
Sorry, I couldn't help last night.
How's the old lady?

PAULA
Still waiting to hear. We'll know more
when Victoria gets in. Thanks for your concern.

COLIN
And Alison?

PAULA
No change. Still out cold.
I'm thinking of playing her some CD's,
the doctors say it might help.

INT. OFFICE

Kirsty's trying to explain to Scott what she wants and is further put out because Scott's deaf.

KIRSTY
(insulting)
Are you deaf?

SCOTT
(Patiently)
If you face me and speak a little more clearly....

KIRSTY
(Realising her mistake) )
Oh!....
Accusingly)
You don't sound deaf.

SCOTT
That's because I wasn't born deaf. I had an accident.

KIRSTY
I don't need to know your problems,
I've enough of my own.

SCOTT
Well then, Ms...?

KIRSTY
Mrs. Mrs. Fletcher, Mrs. Kirsty Fletcher.

Scott makes a note on his PC.

KIRSTY (CONT'D)
It's my husband, Dr. Daniel Fletcher.
A GP. I want you to find him. He's
gone missing.
