Chapter One
With a little help from my friends

Rosie Partridge tossed her luxuriant, chestnut tresses with its fiery lights as she elegantly walked down her path to the front door of the flats.

She didn't see the face from the bushes across the street devouring her every move. She didn't see the click of the zoom lens as several shots of her were taken in quick succession. She didn't see the look of satisfaction glint in the camera man's eye. Nor the cruel smile which coiled on his lips.

He watched a moment more until she had disappeared indoors and then walked nonchalantly past her house, his camera swinging like some snap happy tourist. He paused momentarily at the bottom of the path and looked up at the window of her flat. The copper in Rosie's hair caught the midday sunlight as she moved past her living room window. He stirred himself and proceeded down the road to the church at the end of the street where he took several more photographs before moving on to the telephone booth at the corner of the road. He dialed.

The telephone rang in Rosie's house.
She answered in a cheery voice, "Hello? . . . . . . . . "
Nothing.

Puzzled she replaced the receiver, pulled a face and marched into the kitchen to fill the kettle. The phone interrupted again.

This time Rosie gingerly picked up the receiver and listened. No one spoke. The receiver went 'click'.

She disconnected the call and dialed 1471. An official female voice came down the line,
"You were called today at twelve thirteen. The caller withheld their number. Please replace your set."

Rosie put the phone down and thought for a moment. She activated her answer phone and returned to the kitchen. She snapped on the radio, whilst waiting for the kettle to boil, although the blare of music brought little comfort. She shivered.

That was the fourth time this week.

Work on God Only Knows is in progress.
